Congratulations on The Bunny Lounge MIXtape I see that you won!
DJ NVS Styles: The Mixtape I won for go figure was the first mixtape I dropped with Coast to Coast DJs, in the category my idol DJ Jazzy Jeff was among who I was up against. I'm honored to have won "Best Dance/Party Mixtape". My other 2 nominations were under "Best Rap Mixtape" for 2010 Get Wasted & "Mixtape of the Year" for Hustler's Pair-A-Dice V3 w/ ENY$E.
Beside DJ'ing what else are you doing?
DJ NVS Styles: That's what I'm focused on for now. Started as a battle DJ doing competitions, now working more on clubs, special events, tours & mixtapes. Also wish to do more studio albums, I did the scratches on Too Short's "Burn Rubber" Produced by Lil Jon. Getting album credit feels good to be a part of a song not just playing a song.
What is your approach to djing, do you have anything planned out?
DJ NVS Styles: Now a days DJ’s are pre-programmed with laptops, a lot of DJ’s depend on pre-selected sets. I’m a free style dj meaning I go off the dome, I rather be in a situation where I have a rapper in my ear telling me to play his song and then it hits me that oh shit I got just a few to switch it that’s my style of djing. I never know my next move it depends on the crowd. Get me a cup of Hennessey to catch my buzz and I’m in my zone. Shout out to Hennessey y’all need to give me a sponsorship as much I drink yall @ the clubs
Do you do anything besides Djing?
Dj NVS Styles: Djing is what I do full time. I’ve played with production but decided to focus on my DJ'ing then add producer to my credit later on. The concept I got for my DJ album will be a combination of DJ & Producer production.
Who would you say inspires you?
DJ NVS Styles: DJ AM inspired me by balancing the art of the turntable & laptop. Originally it was DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Scratch, & DJ Premier that got me to love the sound of the scratch. Later on seeing Q-Bert & Mix Master Mike just take the art to a scratch musical level. First person I battled was the homie DJ Craze in 1995 but I didn't know him from before that. I learned a few technical things from him & always see him as my "direct" influence.
What do see yourself doing in the next 5 years?
Become an A&R to help push what I think should be heard or push those artists that have been slept on. Changing the mixtape game by calling mixtapes without mixing, no DJ, no element of DJ'ing "Compilations" and "MIXtapes" with the true DJ element.
If you can change something about the industry?
Dj NVS Styles: It’s too many things. Mainly the people who just don't pay properly or pay at all after work is done. Makes it hard for everyone in the bizz. Some things are good for cross promo where they both win but that's something that needs to be agreed between both parties.
What style of music do you like to play when you’re Djing?
Dj NVS Styles: Its a two part answer. I gotta urban style it doesn’t have to be Rick Ross, it could be a Run DMC record. Something about an Urban Party doesn’t matter what crowd but I like to have an open format flow to cater to my crowd. It really all just depends on the crowd.
What Artist do you plan on working in the future?
Look out for Mixtapes with Creeze, B-Dope, Haitian Fresh, Money Mark, La Lah, Reesehead & Fresha, Billy Blue, Young Boomin, DB Tha General, Bo Strangles, Boo Bundlez, LA Tha Darkman, Travis Porter, & a ton of others.
Any upcoming events?
Dj NVS Styles: Besides the local clubs in Miami I'll be doing more out of town events this year along with the Mixtape projects I'm doing. Expansion is key.
The name change explain?
Dj NVS Styles: My old name when I started in high school was NV which was obviously confused later on with the New York DJ Envy. I decided in 2004 to extend not change my name. I feel it’s more of a statement NVS Styles. When I did the Too Short and Lil Jon project "Burn Rubber" & saw my name credited on the album it just blessed the name. If you ever see NVS spelled the proper way obviously it's not me. DJ NVS Styles is a brand and that I own.
